I was listening to the radio one afternoon when I heard a great fable with an even better life lesson. One day a farmer’s donkey fell into an abandoned well. The animal cried piteously for hours as the farmer tried to figure out how to save him from well. The donkey was quite old and the farmer did not want to hurt him during his attempt to save him. After much deliberation, the farmer finally decided the animal was too old and frail to save.
The farmer instead enlisted the help of his neighbors to fill in the well to prevent any future accidents. They each grabbed a shovel and began to throw dirt into the well. Realizing what was happening, the donkey cried out and wailed horribly. Then, a few shovelfuls later, he quieted down completely. Wondering why the donkey was so quiet the farmer peered down the dark hole in the earth. The farmer was in amazement by what he saw. With every shovelful of dirt that hit the donkey’s back, he would do something amazing. He would shake it off and take a step up on the new layer of dirt. As the farmer and his neighbors continued shoveling dirt into the well on the donkey, he would shake it off and take a step up. Pretty soon, the donkey stepped out of the well and trotted off.
Life is going to shovel dirt on you, all kinds of dirt. The moral of the story is sometimes you may feel like you are being buried alive, just remember to SHAKE IT OFF and TAKE A STEP UP. Consider your troubles a stepping stone with the understanding this too shall pass. Shake it off and take a step up! As Paul Harvey would say, and the rest of the story… The donkey later came back to the farmer and bit him for trying to bury him alive. So the second moral of the story is when you do something wrong and try to cover your ass, it always comes back to bite you.
Was this the first time you heard the donkey and the well fable? If so, comment below and let me know if it made you LOL like it did me. Share with your friends if you agree with the second moral of the story.
